Cat litter boxes seem to work best for bunnies as they are not to small and usually are cheaper. We use wood pellet bedding on the bottom of litter boxes and put hay on top. Keeping their food above or in their litter box is how we litter box train them. All our bunnies learn from a young age before they go home but they will still make mistakes here and there since they’re still babies. Once a rabbit is neutered or spayed they are better at using their litter box.
One or two bunnies?
Bunnies can live by themselves and don’t always need a companion as long as they get daily attention from their family. Rabbits also can do good in pairs. The easiest way to bond bunnies is getting babies under 12wks old. I don’t send opposite sex bunnies home together unless one is already spayed/ neutered to prevent accidents. Brothers can be adopted together but will have to be separated at 9wks old till they are neutered, then would have to be reintroduced to each other. Young does that I’ve bonded, sisters or not, seem to bond well and don’t have to be separated unless they start acting territorial, then would have to be spayed. Any gender bunny can do good together but make sure they are spayed/ neutered before bonding if they are older or males.
How to transition to new feed
When you pick up your new bunny I send a ziplock bag of pellets that they have been eating for you to mix in with your new feed if you decided to change it. This is so they don’t get a upset stomach and can get use to the new food. Suddenly switching feed can make them very sick as they are very sensitive.
Safe bunny food and diet
Rabbits are very sensitive and there’s a lot of food they cannot have. Things like corn, fruit seeds, onions, chocolate, iceberg lettuce, avocado, processed foods, potatoes are toxic to bunnies. You can start feeding fruits and veggies when your bunny comes home in small amounts and you can slowly increase the amount when till they are 6 months old then it can become part of their daily diet. Certain fruits and veggies can be high in sugar and not given in large amounts and only used as treats. Bunnies like things such as carrots, strawberries, bananas, apples, blue berries, cilantro, and lots of other stuff. The main part of your bunnies diet should be hay. I use Timothy hay. Then 1/4 to 1/2 of pellets a day depending on your bunnies weight.
Health
Bunnies are very good at hiding if they are sick. They can be happy and healthy looking one day then the next day be sick. The easiest signs if they are sick if discharge is coming out of the eyes and nose or they are less active then usually. They are many sicknesses a bunny can get if not careful or environment is not clean. I look over each of our rabbits daily checking ears, eyes, nose and body condition to make sure they’re all healthy. We deworm our bunnies monthly. Nails should be trimmed every 4-6wks and they should be brushed at least once a week.
Cages and free roam
Bunnies are very active animals that enjoy to run and play. They can be free roamed like cats and dogs as long as cords and things that can harm them are well put away. I don’t recommend cages smaller than 36x24. If you decide not to have a free roam rabbit they should still be let out of their cage to play daily and given lots of toys. Kwcages.com is a good website for cages as they have lots of options with solid floors and wire floors.
